Occasionally I’ll experience happy accidents in my artwork—times when something I had not intended to happen happens, resulting in an even better outcome. Sound familiar?
Last week I opened up my sketchbook to a fresh new page, put down the first mark, and immediately froze. I had only drawn the base of the vase when I realized it was off—like, really off. My drawing style usually allows for a bit of room for error as it consists of loose, general shapes which lack photographic accuracy. However, in this drawing, the point of view was from above looking down, and the line on my paper wasn't not conveying that at all. I had intended for this study to be simple—focusing on line in a limited color palette. At this point I had to make a change of plans of how to continue. Since I was using a water-soluble medium, I decided to change the wayward line into a light blue wash—essentially “erasing” or “transforming” it into the pattern of the gingham tablecloth. Not only did it fix the problem but I love how it turned out!
I had no intentions beforehand of bringing water into the mix. I must admit that after I messed up right at the beginning I was temped to turn the page and get a clean fresh start. I’m so glad I kept going. I love when happy accidents lead me to a different solution that I may not originally think of.

Lovely post! Using the water gives so much freedom. Is that tin that holds the neocolors the original tin from caran d’ache? I’ve bought all my colours separately and am now looking for a suitable tin 😅🙈
I adore what the versatility of the NeoColors. They are one of my “go to’s” and seem to end up in most of my work. Love what you did!
